Canada’s new government launches comprehensive spending review

We have launched a government-wide spending review to help build the strongest economy in the G7. The focus is on spending less on internal operations and investing more in housing, infrastructure, and productivity.

  • Ministers are reviewing their portfolio to identify up to 15% in savings over three years.
  • DND, CBSA, and the RCMP have a lower 2% target to ensure national security and public safety remain fully protected.
  • Each Minister has been tasked with reviewing spending within their portfolio to assess which programs are meeting their objectives, are core to the Federal mandate, and complement—rather than duplicate—services delivered by other Federal departments or levels of government.
  • Then they will bring forward ambitious savings proposals to spend less on the day-to-day running of government, and invest more in building one strong Canadian economy.
  • Transfers to provinces and individuals—like health care, childcare, and dental care—are fully protected.
  • Budget 2025 proposals must be fully funded through reallocations—no new money unless cost-neutral or specifically requested by Finance.

This was a campaign commitment and we are following through.

This review isn’t a short-term exercise—it is a deliberate, long-term effort to modernize government, improve efficiency, and deliver better results for Canadians. The review reflects a return to core responsibilities and a clear focus on balancing fiscal discipline, quality service delivery, and economic growth.
