On August 1st 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act was passed across the British Empire. Since that time, August 1st has been known as Emancipation Day. Today, we recognize those who fought for the freedom and equality of Black people, and celebrate the significant contributions of Black Canadians to our country. We also acknowledge the lasting impact of the transatlantic slave trade on Black communities, and reflect on the work that's needed to dismantle Anti-Black racism in Canada and address inequality. Together, we can build a better Canada.
