On April 1st, 2023, all Members of Parliament and Senators received an increase in pay which is legislated by Bill C-30, a bill that received Royal Assent in 2005. Given the federal legislative process, the increase is automatically scheduled at the beginning of each new fiscal year.
It has become a tradition for members of the York Region Federal Liberal Caucus members to donate their legislative pay increases to local York Region organizations. These organizations are at the very heart of what makes our communities great places to live. Caucus members include Hon. Mary Ng, MP Markham-Thornhill, Hon. Helena Jaczek, MP Markham-Stouffville, Paul Chiang, MP Markham-Unionville, Francesco Sorbara, MP Vaughan-Woodbridge, Majid Jowhari, MP Richmond Hill, Leah Taylor Roy, MP Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, and Tony Van Bynen, MP Newmarket-Aurora.
Pay raises will be donated to 360 kids, Markham Stouffville Hospital, women’s shelters, mental health organizations, the Mobile Health Unit for York South Simcoe (MOBYSS), Southlake’s Pediatric Oncology Clinic, charities supporting seniors and newcomers in Vaughan-Woodbridge and local organizations in Richmond Hill.
As Canada continues to grapple with economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and global inflation, York Region Liberal MPs will once again be donating their pay increases for 2023-2024 directly back to York Region to help those who need it most.
